THE WEEKEND
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
FP1 — Russell fastest in the only practice session
China's Sprint format meant one hour of practice before the competitive sessions began. Russell topped FP1 with a 1m 32.741s, just 0.120s ahead of Antonelli. Norris was third. The McLarens of Norris and Piastri both showed pace but were eight and seven-tenths off Russell respectively.
Lindblad had his session ended early by a technical issue. Colapinto stopped in the pit lane late on, briefly triggering yellow flags. Hamilton spun at Turn 6 but continued without incident. The session gave teams their only chance to dial in the cars before Sprint Qualifying.

Sprint Qualifying — Russell takes Sprint pole
Russell claimed Sprint pole ahead of Antonelli and Hamilton. The session was Antonelli's first Sprint Qualifying of his career and he performed cleanly. Hamilton and Leclerc gave Ferrari a strong Sprint grid position. The McLarens of Piastri and Norris followed in fifth and sixth.

THE SPRINT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Russell won the 19-lap Sprint, but it was not straightforward.
Hamilton started fourth and made a lightning start, surging to the lead into Turn 9 on lap 1. He and Russell traded the top spot across the opening laps before Russell made a decisive move at the Turn 14 hairpin on lap 5 and began to pull clear.
Antonelli had a poor start from the front row and collided with Hadjar on lap 1, earning a 10-second penalty served in the pits. That dropped him to fifth at the flag. Hulkenberg's Audi broke down mid-race, bringing out the Safety Car. The lead group pitted. Hamilton was stacked behind Leclerc in the pits and rejoined third. Leclerc was second, 0.674s behind Russell at the line.

Qualifying — Antonelli becomes youngest polesitter in F1 history
Saturday qualifying produced one of the standout moments of the season so far. Antonelli set a 1m 32.064s to claim pole for the Grand Prix — becoming the youngest driver ever to take pole position in Formula 1.
Russell had a problem in Q3, briefly stopping on track before recovering. He could only set one lap and finished 0.222s behind his team mate in second. Hamilton was third, Leclerc fourth — just 0.013s separating the two Ferraris. Piastri fifth, Norris sixth.

RACE RECAP
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A historic day in Shanghai. Kimi Antonelli converted pole into his maiden Formula 1 victory.
Before the race even started, the biggest news broke: both McLarens — Norris and Piastri — were unable to start due to separate technical issues. One of the strongest cars of the 2025 season was absent from the race entirely before a wheel had turned.
Off the line, Hamilton got a fast start and moved into the lead. Antonelli held his composure and found his way back to the front. He controlled the race from there, managing pace and tyres without incident. When the dust settled, it was Antonelli first, Russell second for another Mercedes 1-2. Hamilton took third — his first podium as a Ferrari driver and his first since 2024.
Leclerc finished fourth after a close on-track battle with his team mate. Haas driver Oliver Bearman was an excellent fifth. Pierre Gasly claimed sixth for Alpine.
Several drivers failed to finish, including Verstappen, who retired late in the race.

STRATEGY BREAKDOWN
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Unlike Australia, there was no single VSC moment that decided the race. Antonelli managed his pace from the front and controlled the gap to Russell throughout. Hamilton ran competitively in the opening laps but could not sustain the fight for the lead on the same strategy. Ferrari had no strategic errors this time around — they just did not have the outright pace to beat Mercedes.
McLaren's double DNS removed the championship's biggest variable from the equation entirely. That 0-point Sunday will define how tight this title fight gets by mid-season.
CRASHES AND INCIDENTS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Norris and Piastri — Did not start
Both McLarens were unable to take the start due to separate technical issues on each car. It is a catastrophic result for McLaren. Combined with Piastri's pre-race crash in Australia, the team has now lost significant points in the first two rounds through failures entirely outside race conditions. They entered 2026 as one of the title favourites. Two rounds in, they sit third in the constructors' standings with 18 points and no race win.
Antonelli — Sprint penalty
Antonelli made contact with Hadjar on lap 1 of the Sprint and was handed a 10-second penalty. He served it in the pits during the Safety Car. It cost him a podium finish in the Sprint but did not affect his race weekend result.
Verstappen — Race retirement
Verstappen retired from the Grand Prix after a strong start to the race. Red Bull continue to struggle to convert pace into finishes through the opening rounds.
